The King Has Spoken – Bersih, Najib, so how?

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, moved to defuse tension tonight, advising the Najib administration and Bersih 2.0 to hold consultations over the issue of free and fair elections (read here).

This highly unusual act by the King may put Bersih 2.0 in a lurch but it should also pressure Najib to reverse all he has done.

This also may be Najib’s way to quell the public disgust by placing the King between him and the Rakyat.

The King is discouraging the rally but he did not forbid. He can only advice against it but he forgot to advice Perkasa, Umno Youth and the Silat Lincah groups to back off.

The King’s speech must have been written by Najib where it is a one track vision on Bersih and not on the Umno affliates. The omission is glaring as much as Hishammuddin’s declaration that Bersih 2.0 is illegal and had nothing to say about banning Perkasa and Umno Youth who made seditious statements and stirring up with warring innuendoes.

So how will it pan out for July 9? What will Najib do?

Will Najib step back and reverse all the damage done on the various arrests on silly and trumped up charges? Will Hishammuddin nullify Bersih 2.0 illegal status?

After all, why would Najib sit down with an “illegal” organization that doesn’t exist but is a really a coalition of NGOs?

Whoever wrote the King’s speech never thought that Najib and Hishammuddin must rectify all the wrongs before there is any practical discussions with the Bersih 2.0 committee. How then can the King’s advice be observed?

It will be strange for Najib to talk to “illegals” and come to terms. Especially when he and the Election Commission have both denied that the claims by Bersih that the country needs any electoral reform.

It is going to be an impasse moving forward. Najib has said and done so many things with regards to stamping out Bersih 2.0 that there is really nothing to talk anymore.

One way out can be for Bersih 2.0 to set the terms for Najib to reverse all he and his administration has done with regards to arrests and declaration of Bersih’s illegality (one wonders if this is material) and apologize for all the fear mongering and hardship he gave to those arrested, harassed and their families. He should also apologize to the Rakyat for creating fear, uncertainty and doubt in all Malaysians.

Next is for Najib and EC to declare that what they said about the country not having any need for electoral reforms to be incorrectly reported (just a face saving excuse). This will be a hard one to swallow for once they say otherwise, the Bersih 8-points will take center stage.

Above all these that it must be done by July 4 (let’s pick a date) so that in case the talks failed, Bersih 2.0 would have heeded the King’s advice and the rally proceeding will not go against the King in defiance.

How else can Najib sit down to discuss with Bersih 2.0 and heed the King’s advice?

Ambiga has been reported to seek an audience with the King and to urge him to advice BN to reform Malaysia’s badly corrupted electoral system. It does not appear that the rally will be called off at this time.

Certainly, this is a lot of speculation but makes for some food for thought. Whichever way it may turn, Najib will have a tough time because of the way things were handled that have painted himself to a corner.

To reverse what he had done is a slap on his face.

To sit down to discuss with Bersih’s committee is also a slap on his face as they are supposedly “illegal”.

To agree to look into the 8-points is a slap on his face as he and EC had stubbornly declared that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the country’s electoral system.

To disagree to do any of the above is a slap to his face as he will be seen as the one not doing enough to heed the King’s advice.

Whichever way it may be, Najib has lost the plot. Or maybe he doesn’t think so.

The next few days will be very interesting indeed. Let’s pray that wisdom will prevail and not oppress the Rakyat any further.
