The Malaysian Insider reported today (read here) that
“a survey by the state agency in Kelantan last year found that 91% of people in the state agreed to the implementation of Islamic capital punishments or hudud”, quoting Dr Azhar Abdullah, a member of the state’s hudud technical committee. He alleged said that 91.7% of 8,940 respondents supported Kelantan’s move to bring a bill to Parliament to allow the state to implement hudud.
Apparently, the state conducted the survey by sending out SMS to more than 156,000 residents between May 25 and 31 of 2014 but only received 9,654 replies of which only 8,940 were accepted.
There were only two questions in the poll and each question were sent to different residents in the state.
Q1: “After 20 years the Shariah Criminal Code (hudud) is going to become a reality. Agree/Disagree” was sent to 77,382 residents in 12 constituencies, receiving 5,395 replies, out of which 5,284 were accepted.
Q2: “To ensure that Shariah Criminal Code (hudud) is implemented, it is necessary to work with the federal government. Agree/Disagree” was sent to 78,756 residents, receiving 4,259 replies, out of which 3,656 were accepted.
What a strange way of conducting a survey by sending different questions to different people and then summing up the results to make a conclusion. Look at the questions and the conclusion made. The entire survey is totally flawed. It appears that the survey were conducted by people who has never read or conducted surveys.
1. You never send different questions to different people if you want a true picture in a survey.
2. The questions asked were NEVER about if they agreed to implement hudud but rather OTHER related factual matters if they thought hudud was going to become a reality and if the federal government cooperation was important.
3. By sending questions to different people, how is it that the survey can sum up both respondents as if they were the same people answering “agree”?
This brainless survey is meaningless at best. If this is what the PAS Government can do, it is no wonder they are never reading their people’s desires. They conduct a survey to justify their views regardless what people thought. The conclusion is misleading and can never be arrived at. They made up the conclusion that 91% of the people in Kelantan wants hudud. They were never asked that question.
It will have been best to ask:
“I want to have hudud implemented in my state of Kelantan. Agree/Disagree” and send it out to all the 156,000 residents and see what comes back. Send it to everyone in the state. Why hide the point in the survey?
This will make the survey data point blank and unambiguous. PAS Government in Kelantan, go do it!
